Previously available in the beta online app, the fully-fledged desktop version of Photoshop will now have a tool for generating a new background for an existing photo. The tool requires first using AI to remove the background first before generating a new one. A text prompt then tells the software what to generate in the background. Several of Photoshop’s existing AI tools are designed for tasks like eliminating power lines, garbage cans, and other distractions from the background of a photo.

For example, you can use Quick Actions to quickly edit a portrait — it will detect your subject, the background, and features to retouch like teeth, eyes, or skin. Quick Actions automatically create individual masks of each selected element to either enhance with available controls or refine further in the masking panel. It can also suggest the best presets to enhance your image in one tap. Quick Actions in Lightroom for mobile and web claims to speed up your edits by automatically creating masks based on the subject matter of your photo. Quick Actions will then suggest contextual edits and relevant tools, so it suits editing on-the-go or any time you need to make precise edits away from your computer. This is only one of the Quick Tools, but the menu offers plenty more, such as depth blur, smart fix, background tools, subject selection tools, and color options to name a handful.

Adobe’s generative AI push has been much-publicised and much-criticised in recent years. The company is constantly updating and boasting about its Adobe Sensei and Adobe Firefly tools, which integrate generative AI technology comprehensively across the company’s suite of programs. With Adobe Firefly in Photoshop, you can use Generative Fill to expand an image beyond its borders, or use Generate Image to make something up wholesale.

The generative fill tool can be used to add backgrounds, add or remove objects in a picture, and even expand images. Once you get a taste of what this feature can do, you’ll use it regularly. The update also brings a new Dimension tool to Illustrator that automatically adds sizing information to your projects, and a Mockup feature that helps you visualize your designs on real-life objects. Retype is another nifty tool that converts static text in images into editable text. The noteworthy feature of Project Blend is a button labeled Harmonize. This AI-based technology modifies the lighting and color on the subject to match that of the background to which the subject has been added.

With Photoshop, content creators can manipulate images, apply filters, and create custom layouts that stand out in crowded feeds. Working with layers and masks provides flexibility in designing complex compositions and creative experimentation. It offers advanced tools for photo retouching, manipulation, and enhancement for pixel-level perfection in their images. With the Camera Raw plugin, photographers can gain complete control over RAW files, adjusting exposure, white balance, and more. There are around ten other AI tools available in Photoshop that I didn’t mention, many of which are still good tools.
